Students see 'The Lovely Bones' performed at the Cambridge Arts Theatre
On Monday 4 November, our Year 12 and 13 students saw the Bryony Lavery’s adaptation of Alice Seabold’s novel The Lovely Bones at the Cambridge Arts Theatre.
'The most innovative and powerful play I've seen..." This was just one of the reactions of our Sixth Form Drama and Theatre students to the production. Despite the story's dark premise of a 14-year-old girl who is murdered by a neighbour, this was a unique coming-of-age story. The spirited protagonist, Susie, is caught in the afterlife; unable to stop watching life on earth and enjoy her heaven because of the loss, grief and impact her death is having on her loved ones, she tries to help them discover clues towards her murderer, in the hope they can all move on. The static set was ingenious; a large installation with a huge tilted mirror allowing the cast to create illusions, using backlighting and reflections; such as Susie floating in heaven. It encouraged us, as an audience, to see things from a different perspective, realising ultimately, that the people we love are the only thing that really matters and should be at the centre of our world.
