Year 9 visit Royal Academy Summer Exhibition
On Thursday 27 June, 34 Year 9 students took a trip to see the 251st Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. This exhibition continues to be varied and vibrant, showing a variety of media including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, architecture and film. This year, acclaimed British painter Jock McFadyen RA curated the show of over 1500 artworks.
Students also had the opportunity to explore two further exhibitions, 'The Making of an Artist: The Great Tradition', which included works by Turner, Constable, Michelangelo and a nearly full-size copy of Da Vinci’s The Last Supper, and the RA Schools Show 2019. This exhibition transforms the studio spaces beneath the galleries and shows a range of contemporary work by up and coming artists.
The students on the trip, who had selected to study Art at GCSE, were starting to develop their Component 1 coursework to influence their future studies. The students took photographs, sketched some of their favourite pieces and displayed exemplary behaviour throughout the trip. This continues to be an exciting opportunity for St Mary’s Art students to see current art in practice and exhibited.
