Year 9 creative writing scholar is Highly Commended in GSA's national poetry competition

St Mary’s is celebrating continued academic success at a national level after a Year 9 student received Highly Commended in the Girls' School Association (GSA) annual Creative Writing Competition.

This year students from across the country were invited to submit entries based on the eco-theme of ‘Dear Earth’. The competition is designed to give expression to girls’ thoughts on the Earth’s future, highlighting how precious the natural world is and to demonstrate pupils’ experiences of our planet.

After submitting her poem, St Mary’s student, Eloise S., was announced as one of four pupils to be awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in the Key Stage 3 category of the national competition.

Here is an extract from her emotive poem:

Dear Earth

When you create flowers the colour of the sun, I smile

When you show me clouds that look like a stairway into the sky, I feel free

When I am angry, I walk in your anger

When I feel isolated, I am not alone because of you

When my thoughts are too much, I escape with you

When I am sad, I cry, and you cry with me

When I am bored, I find treasure in you

So, dear Earth thank you, thank you, thank you.

The winning entries were formally announced at GSA’s summer briefing event on 13 June.

Congratulations Eloise!

Eloise's success in this national competition completes a year of great success for our talented group of Creative Writing Scholars, who have been working hard on their craft throughout the year, inspired by additional workshops and creative competitive opportunities.
