Year 8 compete in ‘ludi scaenici’ Latin play competition
On 23 May nine Year 8 students entered the 42nd annual ‘ludi scaenici’ Latin play competition at the Perse school. St Mary’s play was about the characters in their Latin course – the female characters Metella and Melissa were fed up that Caecilius and Celer chose to glorify the stories of Greek heroes in art while ignoring the stories about Greek heroines and contrived a way to celebrate some famous women. Five schools competed, and the standard was very high. Although this year the winners were Ipswich school, our students should be very proud of themselves – they worked very hard to learn their lines, pronounce the Latin accurately and convey the story through clear and convincing acting. The judges praised the cast for their performance and appreciated the contemporary relevance of the plot, comparing it to modern discussion about the portrayal of women in media. Well done everyone for reminding us that #itaveroillapotest (Yes she can!)
