Year 7 visit St Albans Cathedral
The girls have been studying the importance of the Church in medieval England and so a visit to the Cathedral, home to the shrine of St. Alban, Britain's first Christian martyr, really helped bring their studies to life. The girls have also been studying social justice as part of their Integrated Learning Week, and their visit was an opportunity to learn more about the religious intolerance of the time that led to the execution of St Alban.
The girls enjoyed dressing up as medieval monks, taking part in a role-play activity to learn more about the roles and jobs of the monks at the cathedral. They learned how Alban saved the life of a Christian who had been found guilty of illegally spreading the Gospel by taking his place at his trial. Alban was executed and the girls visited his shrine, lighting a candle in his memory. The Cathedral is decorated with beautifully intricate tiles and the girls enjoyed the chance to get their hands dirty designing, creating and decorating their own clay tile to take home. Thought-provoking and creative, the trip gave the girls a fascinating and highly enjoyable insight into the life of a medieval cathedral.
