Year 6 learn about ancient civilisations at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology
As part of their study of the ancient civilisation of the Indus Valley, Year 6 visited the museum of Archaeology and Anthropology for a workshop. The session began with a general look at the civilisation of the area and how it had lain undiscovered for thousands of years. The girls asked pertinent questions and showed good observational skills. These skills were then put to use in the workshop sessions. They learned that, although it is clear that the Indus valley settlers did use a form of writing, a clear understanding has been difficult to achieve due to the scant amount of evidence. Using their best decoding skills the girls undertook the task of deciphering the pictorial seals used by merchants. This activity enabled the girls to appreciate the challenges faced by historians when trying to piece together an understanding of the lives of those who lived in ancient civilisations.
