Year 6 discover the properties of light
Year 6 have continued to investigate the properties of light in their Science lesson in the last week before term ended.
They learnt about what refraction was and how light rays can bend or change direction when they travel through different transparent materials, such as water, plastic, and glass. They then investigated two different ways that refraction causes illusions.
In the picture they are looking at how an image drawn on a piece of paper underneath the glass first magnifies and then disappears when the glass is covered with paper. When the refracted rays are bent at different angles by adding the water, it means they can be blocked by the paper on top of the glass. Since the rays of light cannot get through the paper, they cannot reach the girls’ eyes and they could not see the image. It seemed to have disappeared, which caused great amazement!
