Year 12 explore how the world of medicine is being transformed by artificial intelligence

Ever keen to keep up with AI's rapid advancement of medicine, St Mary's aspiring medics were delighted to attend the student-led conference recently held at Abbey College Cambridge, which explored how the world of medicine is being transformed by artificial intelligence and technology.

Talks from pioneers on their respective fields were given by Professor Raj Jena on Osairis, an AI cancer imaging tool, Professor Vikas Khanduja on the SMART Total Hip replacement technique, and Professor Eoin McKinney on Systems Immunology and Digital Twins.

An afternoon of collaboration on a challenging task then followed - to propose an effective AI-based solution to either cancer, diabetes, stroke or Alzheimer's. Students worked in mixed groups with schools across Cambridgeshire, with St Mary's students, Dorothy S. and Emily C. in each of the two groups which were selected to present at the conclusion of the day.

The winning group, which included Emily C., were the proud presenters of an impressive piece on the use of AI in diagnosing stroke patients.

Our students all said they had an incredible day and would like to thank Abbey College for such an amazing opportunity.
