World Book Day
Last week was very exciting for the girls in the Junior School as they celebrated World Book Day - all week… On Monday the girls were visited by children's author Alice Hemming, who has written many books, including Rickety Rocket, The Black and White Club and Gold Star for George. In assembly she shared her new book – Bibble and The Bubble – with the whole school, and told the girls about coming up with the idea for the story, and the process of getting the book published. She then spent time with the girls in their classrooms, answering their questions and inspiring some fantastic creative writing.
The Scholastic Book Fair was in school for the week too and the girls enjoyed buying a variety of exciting books and spending their World Book Day tokens. Commission from the book fair goes to providing new books for the Junior School library. World Book Day itself (Thursday 2 March) is an annual event celebrated by schools around the country and, as part of the celebrations, the girls came to school on Thursday dressed as their favourite characters. There were some imaginative costumes from pupils and staff alike – including a mysterious pupil Mrs Sarah Cliff came across in the hall on Thursday afternoon! To end the week the girls took part in the annual inter-house book quiz on Friday, showing off their knowledge of books and the history of children's literature. It is always a hotly contested competition, with 50 house points awarded to the winning house. This year’s winner was: Elms House.
