Students return to Shakespearean times

Year 8 English students enjoyed a trip to London on Tuesday 3 October to visit the Globe Theatre. The day began with a chance to find out what it would have been like to live in Shakespeare’s day, followed by a tour of the theatre itself. The girls had the chance to practise standing at the front of the stage as a ‘groundling’, someone who would have been too poor to pay for a seat, heard about the old age tradition Bear Baiting and also had the fantastic opportunity to play with the 'wind machine' used to produce the sounds of the storm in a 2008 production of King Lear!

When the tour had finished it was time for a drama workshop. With guidance from actors and experts from the theatre, the girls performed scenes from A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, which they will be studying later on in the year. The girls performed well and enjoyed the chance to learn about the play in a lively and authentic theatrical environment.

In the afternoon, the group visited the theatre’s Shakespeare exhibition and watched a demonstration about stage costumes. After a short visit to the gift shop to purchase quills, models of the theatre and anything and everything related to Shakespeare, the girls returned to school brimming with new-found knowledge about the Bard.
