St Mary’s Junior School choir sings for sell-out crowds at Cambridgeshire County Day

St Mary’s Junior School choir wowed the crowds at Newmarket Racecourse yesterday (23 June) at the Cambridgeshire County Day, with two special singing performances - including an unforgettable performance of the official County Day Jubilee song.

The once-in-a-lifetime event, which was attended by both the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, was held at Newmarket’s July Course and celebrated the best of Cambridgeshire - whilst also commemorating Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Pupils from St Mary’s Junior School’s choir took to the stage twice in the afternoon to perform five songs, including a special Jubilee song composed by Sir Richard Stilgoe entitled ‘She Not Only Reigns, But She Pours’.

In the choir’s first performance at 1:35pm, the girls sang three songs including: Touch the Sky; Gospel Truth / I will go the distance; and A Whole New World. There was then a break for horse racing before the girls headed back on stage to peform Encanto hit ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ before ending their set with a rendition of the special Jubilee song.

Charlotte Avery, Headmistress at St Mary’s School, Cambridge, said:

“What an unforgettable experience this was for our students and one that I am sure they will cherish for the rest of their lives. The whole of the Junior School was a buzz of excitement knowing that our choir was going to sing the special Cambridgeshire County Day Jubilee song and they did a fantastic job! It was a memorable day celebrating the best of Cambridgeshire and we were truly honoured to be a part of it. Our girls gave it their all and we are very proud of them.”

The Cambridgeshire County Day is the first event of its kind and will never happen again in the same format. Filled with exciting showcases from the best of the county, the event had more than 100 marquees, hosting 150 of the best businesses, public sector, charity, community and sporting organisations in Cambridgeshire. Displays on the day included tractors, trucks, diggers, bikes, boats, emergency and military vehicles, plus a wide range of wonderful performances.  To top it all off there were seven exciting horse races throughout the day too.
