St Mary’s GCSE Greek outreach programme proves a success with outstanding results
Students participating in St Mary’s Classical Greek outreach programme have delivered a fantastic set of GCSE results in the subject, following two years of studying outside of normal curriculum time.
Year 10 pupils from St Bede’s Inter-Church School joined St Mary’s Year 10 and 11 students as part of St Mary’s GCSE outreach programme, which is taught in after-school classes one day per week. The results of the programme are clear, with 100% of participating students achieving grades 6-9 (A*-B); 100% of St Mary’s students achieving 7-9 grades (A* or A); and more than half of the class (63%) achieved grades 8-9 (A*).
Mrs Rebecca Lyon, Head of Classics at St Mary’s, said:
“St Mary’s has a track record of delivering effective outreach programmes and this is no exception. We are immensely proud of all the students who went above and beyond to learn Classical Greek over the past two years. This class faced disruption in their first year of the course, with all lessons taking place remotely because of COVID bubble rules – even when all other classes were back face-to-face. Despite this, their determination to succeed shone through and students now have an outstanding set of results that will look impressive on their CVs.”
At St Mary’s Classical Greek can be taken as an additional subject and students are able to join the two-year course when they are in Years 9 or 10. An examination is taken after two years of study, either in Year 10 or Year 11. The course involves a mixture of language, literature, and source-based cultural topics.
