Sports Day 2016

Sports Day 2016

St Mary’s School, Cambridge continued the tradition of starting sports day with a colourful Olympic style opening ceremony, displaying the community spirit as the girls walked with their House families, led by Sixth Form House captains holding House flags.

The team spirit on the day was as wonderful as always, as the girls cheered on all competitors regardless of position. The girls’ faces showed their excitement as they stood on the winners’ podium and smiled for their photographs.

Highlights of the results

The overall winning House was Paston – congratulations to each member of Paston House! Paston House also won in the Year 8 and Year 9 category, with Brookside coming first in Year 7, and Cavendish coming first in Year 10.

The Hope Gilbert trophy, for best Year 10 individual performance on the day, was awarded to four students this year as the competition was so close: Sidney W. in third place, Emily H. and Niamh M. in joint second place, and Lottie D. in first place.

A number of school records were broken this year: Year 7 student Ellie M., who achieved 4.35m in the long jump (beating her own record of 4.34m from earlier this year – the previous record was 4.09m which has been the record since 1992); Year 7 student Tindra B-H., who threw a rounders ball 27.20m (previous record was 26.09m from June 2015); and then Year 7 student Emma R., who threw a rounders ball to set the new school record of 27.42m; and, earlier this year, Year 7 student Poppy E., threw the javelin 16.90m to match the 20 year record of 16.90m set in 1996.

Well done to all the girls for joining in with the day’s events with such enthusiasm and congratulations to all of the girls who achieved a personal best; broke a record; performed better than they had hoped to; or simply got stuck in with competing and cheering for their peers.
