Sixth Form students explore career prospects at networking event
Every year our Lower Sixth students are invited to join a speed networking event, which gives the girls the opportunity to meet with professionals from various industries. This year we welcomed an architect, a vet, a company director and a paediatric doctor, among others, whilst also having the privilege of welcoming back alumnae who have gone on to work in government and as emergency medical consultants.
The event aims to broaden Sixth Form students’ horizons and to introduce them to careers they may not have previously considered, but might be suitable for. The students had the opportunity to spend four minutes with each professional talking to them about their career and life experiences and also about their desired career path in comparison to their current career successes. Students worked their way around the room for an hour or so to ensure that they benefitted from the full range of jobs on offer.
This event is always a great success and ignites passion in the girls for starting an exciting career. One said: “The event is a useful exercise because we can ask anything relating to work experience, university and careers.”. Another said that it “inspired” her to think of different career prospects.
We also receive fantastic feedback from the visitors who give up their time to help our girls. One employer stated: “I certainly felt a real buzz in the room! I completely agree with broadening the students’ horizons - life's a long journey and they need to have breadth of interest and knowledge.”
