Robo-cups for Junior School girls
On Thursday 13 October 15 of our Year 5 girls participated in a 'Crumble Robot Taster Day' organised by BT Education. The girls spent the day at BT Headquarters in Martlesham Heath near Ipswich and took part in a series of practical sessions focused on programming ‘Crumble Robots’. The day culminated in a team competition during which the girls put their new programming skills to the test against teams from other schools. This was one of a number of similar sessions leading up to the ‘UK National RoboCupJunior Rescue Line Tracking Championships’ in June.
The team had approximately two hours to program their robot to compete against other teams’ robots – tracking around a complex circuit following a black line. The competition was contested by 27 teams from schools across East Anglia, and our Year 5 team finished in fifth place overall – congratulations girls who now look forward to hopefully progressing to the Grand Final in June.
On Tuesday 18 October it was the turn of 14 Year 6 girls to attend a similar event at BT Headquarters in Martlesham Heath, this time the ‘CoSpace Virtual Robotics Taster Day'. The event is the first stage of the ‘UK National CoSpace Championships’, which also culminates in a Grand Final in June.
The girls had two hours to program their team’s robot to compete against another team's robot, the challenge this time being to collect as many coloured objects as possible. All of the objects had to be deposited in the orange 'drop zone' before the end of the three minute competition time, and bonus points were also awarded for a number of specified actions. Our Year 6 team pupils deserve to feel incredibly proud of themselves, having finished fifth out of the 75 participating teams and, again, should now hope to progress to the Grand Final in June.
