Records broken at Junior School Sports Day
On Monday 24 June we held our annual Junior School Sports day at the Cambridge University Athletics track. We were extremely lucky with the weather. It was great to welcome so many parents, relatives and friends to enjoy the afternoon and we were treated to some impressive performances.
As with all aspects of life at St Mary’s, we value equally the effort that the girls put in to the day as well as their skill and athletic prowess. It was heartening to see all trying their best to score valuable points for their house and cheering each other to the finish line regardless of position.
We had so many entrants for the 600m that the event was divided in to two races. The competitors all paced themselves excellently and an exciting finish saw Harriet C. in Year 6 achieve the best time over the two heats. While the Pre-prep girls were having fun on the track in races including the bean bag fetch, Year 3 upwards were battling it out in the field events including the newly included Javelin competition for Year 6 which was won by Eva C.
The sprints were highly contested and hard work and perseverance payed off as spectators were treated to some very close finishes. Two track records were broken this year with Stella C. in Year 4 setting a new 75m record of 12.73s and Phoebe H. in Year 5 achieving 15.03 in the 100m. Congratulations to them both.
There were so many other exciting events on the track and field across the afternoon as well as numerous examples of our girls showing perseverance, team spirit and support for others. The relays were a highlight at the end of a fantastic afternoon of Athletics. Thank you to all the girls for taking part with such enthusiasm and to all staff and sports scholars who helped make this year’s Sports day so fantastic. An additional thank you to the PTA for providing much appreciated refreshments.
Congratulations to Paston who were the winning house overall this year!
