Mary Ward High School opens in Zimbabwe
Our long-term partnership with a project in Mbizo, Zimbabwe, has hit a significant milestone, as Mary Ward High School opened its doors on 14 January 2020.
Funds raised by our generous school community have made a significant contribution to the completion of this ambitious project, which builds on the success of the Mbizo Primary School project. From fun runs to non-uniform days and cake sales, our girls have shown both energy and creativity in raising funds totalling over £8000. Our most recent efforts have provided desks and chairs for the School, created by local industry in Zimbabwe.
School Head Sr Shonhiwa C.J. held an assembly to welcome the 55 students and teaching staff, and parents were given a tour of the school.
One pupil said: "On the first day of assembly we were told that we were part of the School’s history in Zimbabwe. It made me feel proud to part of such a historic moment. Also, it was made known to us that the school was named after a great woman called Mary Ward who was the foundress of the Sisters’ Congregation. I was happy to know that one of her sayings "Do good and do it well" was our motto. So far, my first few days in High School have been exciting and very good as the Sisters are encouraging us always to work very hard in our schoolwork. Discipline and doing our work very well would help us achieve good results said Sr Tanyanyiwa, one of my teachers. I am happy to be learning at Mary Ward High and I look forward to many more […] exciting days."
