Mary Pitman - alumna
Mary Pitman, an alumna of St Mary’s School, Cambridge, has sadly passed away at the age of 101. She was a St Mary’s girl through and through; having moved here from London as a toddler, she attended St Mary’s School, Cambridge between 1923 and 1934. After she left St Mary’s, Mary worked at Old Addenbrooke’s in an administrative role during the Second World War. She married her late husband, Alec, at Great St Mary’s Church in 1942, and lived opposite Selwyn College before buying a plot of land in Trumpington and building a house there. After they moved in in 1948, Mary lived there for the rest of her life. She and Alec had three children – Michael, Anthony and Anne – and when they were grown up Mary returned to working for the hospital, where for 15 years she delivered books to patients as part of its library service.
Mary was a dedicated wife, mother, friend and member of the WI. A testament to the strength of her friendships through the years, she kept in contact with alumna and former Headmistress Sister Christopher, who is now aged 101 and teaching in a St Mary’s School in Zimbabwe. Mary came into the School last year to celebrate the milestone of her 100th birthday, a very happy occasion attended by friends and family. She will be dearly missed by the St Mary’s community.
