Learn more about our International and Inclusivity Committee

In today's interconnected world, schools are more than just places of learning - they are hubs for fostering diversity, inclusivity, and global understanding. Here at St Mary’s, we take immense pride in our thriving International and Inclusivity Committee, a dynamic group of dedicated students, all with the collective aim of celebrating the unique cultures, traditions, and perspectives of our diverse student body.

Through a variety of initiatives, events, and programmes, the committee creates an environment where every student feels valued and empowered to be proud of who they are, making our School a vibrant tapestry of global unity and inclusion.

Joann C., Head Boarder and part of the committee says,

“We work with the teachers to try and ensure that every individual—regardless of background, identity, or ability - feels a genuine sense of belonging at our School.”

Led by Miss Simms, the committee meets once a fortnight and is open to all students in Years 7 to 13.

The committee has led a variety of projects this year including:

  • Lunar New Year 2024 celebrations – a range of snacks from different countries were available at lunchtime. Committee members planned and presented displays and quizzes all about their home countries.

  • Digital accessibility - The committee worked in collaboration with staff with experience of visual impairment and in the SEND department to update our Digital Accessibility Guidelines and presented them in ‘assemblies of awareness’.

  • Sensory awareness - Ear defenders are readily available to be borrowed by students at any time. They are kept in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC)

  • Black History Month: Reclaiming Narratives 2024 – Whole school assemblies focussed on this year's BHM theme, exploring the narratives of black women throughout history.

  • Themed book displays – The library volunteers help to update book displays based on topical cultural themes. They also present in assemblies and display posters throughout the school.

The committee is busy planning its programme for 2025. This includes key dates such as the Lunar New Year in January, LGBT+ History Month in February, and International Women’s Day in March.
