Languages Week
Whilst European Languages Week is celebrated internationally, we are being slightly less selective and celebrating Languages Week, incorporating languages from further afield. On each day this week there has been a language selected to celebrate and different aspects of the school day have been presented in that language. For instance, on Monday students were invited to watch Spanish film ‘Zipi y Zape’, and lunches were labelled in Spanish, teaching students about sandwich fillings of ‘huevos’ and ‘atún’ (eggs and tuna respectively). On Tuesday the lunchtime film was in French, ‘Un monstre à Paris’, on Wednesday the German film ‘The book thief’ was shown, and on Thursday a Chinese film called ‘Hero’ was played.
Throughout the week girls have been invited to participate in a general knowledge quiz about Europe, and each year group has been challenged to learn a new language: Year 7 Norwegian, Year 8 Danish, Year 9 Swedish, Year 10 Turkish, and Year 11 tackled Ukrainian. A further reason for naming our celebration simply ‘Languages Week’ is the Sixth Form is learning ‘Esperanto’ – a made up language! All girls in the school were welcome to participate in the activities, which for students who are no longer studying a foreign language gives the opportunity to exercise this particular skill in a relaxed environment
