Ladies who lunch
This week’s ‘Ladies who lunch’ event featured speaker Sister Anna Hawke, who represented the Justice and Peace group at OLEM Church. With International Human Rights Day falling on Thursday 10 December, it was fitting to discuss issues related to human rights and social injustice this week. Sister Anna discussed the rationale behind the work of the group (found in the social teaching of the Catholic Church as well as UN statements and historical experiences), before outlining various issues that the group discusses and works with at the moment; locally, nationally and internationally. These are, among others, the refugee crisis, the problem of human trafficking, climate change, homelessness and campaigning for the living wage. The girls left the session equipped with practical ways in which to honour Mahatma Ghandi’s call to “Be the change you wish to see in the world”.
