Ladies Who Lunch: Dr Carmen Caliz
On Friday 13 January a group of Sixth Form students enjoyed the first Ladies Who Lunch session of the new term. The girls’ guest this week was Dr Carmen Caliz, a translation and English Literature graduate who has a passion for international projects. Dr Caliz spoke to the girls about her impressive thesis, which was published in her book Writing from the Borderlands:
"This work looks at the literary responses of three North American minorities: the Chicanos in the United States, the African Caribbean minority in Canada, and the Native North Americans.
Carmen Cáliz-Montoro shows how in these diverse yet similar cases mythology and symbolism are transformed and recreated to respond to the burdens of history to produce new works of art."
The girls came together in Ms Avery’s parlour to ask questions about Dr Caliz’s career and enjoyed hearing about the international projects she has worked on for the University of Toronto, including volunteering in Bolivia.
Dr Caliz was a real inspiration to all 12 Lower Sixth girls who felt encouraged to do what they love, no matter what that is; a great lesson for our girls to go away with. Thank you very much to Dr Caliz for her time, and sharing her fascinating story. We are now looking forward to hearing from our next guest, Dr Juliet Vickery, Head of International Research, RSPB Centre of Conservation Science, at the Ladies Who Lunch session on Friday 10 February.
