Duke of Edinburgh Gold award practice expedition
Sixth Form students undertaking their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award spent last week on a practice expedition in the Yorkshire Dales. Despite inclement weather (including a hailstorm!), the group worked well together, sharing planned routes when they had to amalgamate into one group from the original two. The girls demonstrated excellent camp craft and various meals of rice, pasta and noodles were cooked on the trangia stoves. Although temperatures during the day were fairly pleasant, overnight it was very cold in the tents and the girls awoke on Sunday morning to see snow all over the tops of the Dales.
Starting in Hawes, the group successfully navigated their way along the 80km route, finishing with smiles all round in Leyburn. They are now planning their qualifying expedition, which will take place over the Yorkshire Moors in July.
