Digital leaders speak out about Safer Internet Day
In preparation for Safer Internet Day on 5 February, the School’s digital ambassadors held an assembly on Friday. The role of the 9 digital leaders, who are students in Years 7-12, is to lead on internet safety and impart their knowledge with the entire school, explore innovative ways to use digital learning tools in lessons and ensure that we are using current digital learning tools to their full potential.
The digital leaders started off by asking the audience what they share online, and why. They reminded our students to be mindful of what they share on social media and to be aware of the personal data that various big companies, such as Facebook, store and analyse. The digital leaders also spoke of the unintended consequences of sharing information online; how although information might just stay with the person you intended to see it, it could be shared again or screenshotted by someone else, or analysed and stored by certain apps and websites.
They suggested that students explore what information is being stored about them, to make sure they ask for permission and gain consent before they share things about other people, and to think about what they are sharing; who can see it now and in the future?
