Last week Mrs Susan McKay, a teacher at our Junior School, had the exciting opportunity to be part of the Developing Leadership Through Wellness and Mindfulness symposium run by the National Coalition of Girls Schools in Los Angeles, California. Rachel Simmons (author of ‘Odd Girl Out’), the keynote speaker, was incredibly inspiring – talking on the fact that we need to encourage our girls to acknowledge failure as success. In a world still heavily driven by men, she also spoke on the fact that there is something inherently wrong with our culture and we must encourage our girls to believe in their powers, have confidence and become more resilient.
Following on from the keynote speech, as well as having the opportunity to listen to others from various schools in the United States; hearing a presentation on what does it mean to a be global citizen in the 21st century Mrs McKay also had the opportunity to speak to participants on the vision of creating a peaceful classroom and how this could be done through practical tips and ideas. This event left Mrs McKay feeling inspired and driven to help our girls to even more success but at the same time aid them in all the pressures life throws at us.
