Celebrating Chinese New Year
On Friday 5 February 31 of our students studying Mandarin, accompanied by Mrs Helen Garrett, Mr Darren Kelly and our teacher of Mandarin Miss Yan Gao, celebrated the Chinese New Year by dining out in a Chinese restaurant in Cambridge. The group enjoyed the internationally-celebrated famous roast duck pancakes and some other dishes which are ‘must-eats’ for Chinese New Year; spring rolls, fish (which symbolises affluence), and dumplings (which symbolise wealth). The girls enjoyed learning to eat with chopsticks, and sampling fried sweet potato, covered in hot sugar syrup, dipped into cold water to crystallise. It was also Jessica C.’s birthday and the girls sang Happy Birthday to her in Chinese – although a little noisy, the Chinese people sitting nearby were amazed by the girls’ singing in Chinese.
