Cecilia's charitable busking
Year 7 student Cecilia R. B. has recently been busking to raise money for Mines Advisory Group (MAG) – an international charity helping to keep people safe from landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO), and a cause which Cecilia and her family are passionate about.
Cecilia’s motivation for supporting MAG was sparked when she travelled to Laos with her family. Laos is on record as being the most bombed country per capita in the world and Cecilia was moved by the evident impact landmines and UXO have on the people there. Cecilia particularly admired the work and courage of an all-female de-mining group in Laos, which works tirelessly to ensure that the environment they live in is a safe place for themselves and their children.
Inspired by her trip, Cecilia has been busking to raise money for the charity and raised £120 one Saturday afternoon during the half term break. Cecilia has also busked for her own entrepreneurial reasons, such as to purchase the harp that she now plays, and to raise funds to enjoy the school lunches in place of her regular packed lunch.
Cecilia will be busking to support MAG during the summer break – please look out for her either in the market place or close to the entrance to the Lion Yard shopping centre, she will no doubt be grateful to see friendly faces and to receive donations for this worthy cause. Well done to Cecilia for giving up her time in the pursuit of supporting charitable endeavours and for taking entrepreneurial initiative to raise money for her own interests!
