Battlefields
On 24 February Year 9 students visited Ypres and the surrounding area as part of their History studies on World War I and trench warfare. The theme of the trip was to consider how the war has been remembered, and whether it has been remembered fairly. The group visited the town of Ypres, which was destroyed and rebuilt, and looked around the museum there. They also visited some of the most important memorials to the fallen soldiers, including Tyne Cot and the German cemetery at Langemark. The girls were also given the opportunity to see a former dressing station at Essex Farm and to visit some reconstructed trenches. As part of the year group’s work on memorialisation, the girls held their own service of remembrance at Menin Gate. The next challenge is for the girls to use their experiences to create a research project.
