AstraZeneca art

Some of our Year 9 and Year 10 students, joined by their parents and our Head of Careers and Work Experience, Mrs Sarah Newbery, attended a ceremony on Tuesday 19 July at AstraZeneca’s brand new Research & Development Building in Cambridge. The hoardings around the new site displayed ‘Science in Pictures’, a series of pieces of art created by students from nine local schools (including ours) to showcase science through artwork. The project came about after students attended a number of workshops hosted by AstraZeneca at the University Technical College, Cambridge Science Centre and STEM Team East in June 2015.

The hoardings have won an Ivor Goodsite award for the Best Considerate Construction Project 2016 (in recognition of efforts to improve the environment around the construction site) and, as our students contributed to the artistic entry our students were invited to attend the award ceremony.

At the award ceremony a representative from AstraZeneca spoke about the company’s success in controlling its impact on the environment, for instance, more than 90% of waste and energy from the construction site is being recycled and reused. Students were then invited to make a replica of their fantastic pieces of ‘science cell’ art by converting the image onto a decorative badge, and attendees enjoyed taking the opportunity to see the artwork up close.
