Antigone and Lysistrata
Students from Year 10 upwards enjoyed a trip to Cambridge Arts Theatre on Thursday 13 October to watch the triennial Greek play, this year featuring a double-bill of the tragedy Antigone and the comedy Lysistrata. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to hear Ancient Greek spoken and sung aloud and get a sense of what it would have been like for the original Greek audiences to watch theatrical competitions. Our students learning Ancient Greek were also thrilled to recognise lots of the vocabulary! The acting and staging were very impressive and all of the girls greatly enjoyed the plays. Those who have studied Antigone particularly appreciated the emotions and tension conveyed, while all the students commented on the difference between the sombre tragedy and the joyful and exuberant comedy.
