A love of Latin
Year 10 Latin students Olivia H. and Daisy M. recently represented our school in the Cambridge Classical Association Latin and Greek Reading Competition. Olivia and Daisy both entered the Intermediate Latin Prose category, which involved reading aloud a passage from the letters of Pliny the Younger. The chosen letter told the story of how Pliny the Elder was killed in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Olivia and Daisy had to learn how to pronounce Latin vocabulary as the Romans would have, and also to express the passage clearly and dramatically. Both students worked extremely hard to gain a thorough understanding of the piece in order to perform it. Olivia commented that the experience made her think more about how Latin would have sounded at the time, which has made her more appreciative of Latin stories in lessons. Both girls enjoyed the introduction to Latin literature which comes ahead of their Year 11 studies. Olivia and Daisy read clearly and expressively – congratulations to them both.
