Year 11 student achieves huge success in national maths challenge
A St Mary’s Senior School student has been recognised as one of the country’s top performing mathematics pupils after achieving outstanding success at this year’s Maclaurin Mathematical Olympiad challenge.
Elizabeth G. undertook the prestigious two-hour challenge in March this year, after being invited to take part alongside 600 of the best Year 11 mathematicians from across the UK. The challenge consisted of six problems, which each required full written solutions. Recognising her exceptional maths skills, Elizabeth was awarded a certificate of distinction and a bronze medal.
Charlotte Avery, Head at St Mary’s School, said:
“We are all very proud of Elizabeth and her outstanding academic achievement. To be able to consider yourself one of the best Year 11 mathematicians in the UK is an incredible accomplishment and we congratulate her on her exceptional success. We look forward to continuing to nurture Elizabeth’s mathematical aspirations over the next two years when she moves into our Sixth Form.”
Elizabeth G. added:
“I am absolutely thrilled with this news and my sincere gratitude goes to St Mary’s, and in particular Mr Bertram, for empowering me to achieve this. Mr Bertram has been an incredible maths teacher over the last two years, and I cannot emphasise enough how grateful I am to him. I look forward to studying Maths and Further Maths A Level at St Mary’s in September.”
The Maclaurin Mathematical Olympiad is a follow-on round to the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge. Only 600 qualifying students are invited to take part from the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge. The highest-scoring participants each receive certificates of distinction and merit.
