Poetry is alive and well at St Mary's!

Poetry is alive and well at St Mary's!

St Mary's School, Cambridge lunchtime Poetry Society attracts poetry enthusiasts from KS3 to KS5.

This year we have enjoyed writing free verse and  run workshops creating our own cut-out poetry which was recited or read for the group. We celebrated National Poetry Day with an open mic event. We have also shared our appreciation of a wide range of poetry, from Emily Dickinson to Amanda Gorman. The highlight of our year has been taking part for the first time in the national Poetry by Heart competition in the freestyle category. For this, members of the group chose a poem from the anthology, learned it and brought their creativity to reciting it, supported by feedback from group. Final recitations were recorded and uploaded to the competition website. We were delighted to have one staff finalist in the competition, Mrs Brooks, who with Miss Simms and Ines Milano attended the inspiring grand finale at Shakespeare's Globe in London on 1st July - a feast of poetry recitations by finalists from KS2 to KS5, teachers, the Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage, and the Children's Laureate, Joseph Coelho. We have all learned a great deal from taking part in the competition and St Mary's Poetry Society are already planning for Poetry by Heart 2025!
