GCSE results day finds girls resilient, ready and raring to go
20 August 2020 was a much anticipated GCSE results day for girls at St Mary’s Senior School, Cambridge, following a school year that has tested character and academic capability in equal measure.
We are proud to say the resilience we instil in students from an early age has shone through. Our 2020 results continue to represent the high academic standards we expect, but equally impressive is the ‘keep calm and carry on’ attitude girls have adopted as they prepare to embark on the vital next stage of their education.
Our headline GCSE results are:
- 45% A* grades
- 66% A* - A grades
- 95% A*- B grades
- 99% A*- C grades
Results were strong across the board, from languages to sciences:
- 88% achieved A* in Music, 75% achieved A* in Mandarin, and 68% achieved A* in Biology
- 100% achieved A*-A in Latin Language, 86% achieved A*-A in Geography and 84% achieved A*-A in Biology, Chemistry and Physics
Equipped with these stellar results, alongside the breadth of St Mary’s skills, values and attitudes, the class of 2020 is ready and raring to go. We wish all our leavers well and can’t wait to welcome many girls back to our Sixth Form, where our provision for supporting A Level studies – either face-to-face or as remote learning – is in robust shape.
Alongside celebrating academic successes today, we would also like pay tribute to all the other qualities these amazing young people have shown us. In an uncertain and rapidly changing world, results alone are not enough – it is character that will enable our girls go on to achieve their ambitions in the coming years.
Eliza M. celebrated 11 9’s (equivalent to high A*s) and can’t wait to move up to our Sixth Form in a few weeks. She commented:
“I’m really looking forward to starting Sixth Form at St Mary’s, having greatly enjoyed my past five years at the Senior School. I am so grateful for the wonderful community and incredibly supportive teachers that have enabled me to achieve my goals. My A Level choices are English, History, Latin and Theology and I can’t wait to get started in September!”

They reacted to the Covid-19 curveball with resilience and brilliance. As our classrooms were replaced by remote learning, our girls surprised us with the creative and innovative ways they found to work collaboratively and to connect as a community.
