Aspiring STEM stars learn from alumna Joyce Mok's career experience at The Hague

As part of our ongoing Learning Lunch programme at The Sixth, students met with St Mary's alumna Joyce Mok, who is currently working as a Research Pharmacologist at The Hague, in The Netherlands.

St Mary's was extremely grateful to Joyce for giving up her time to talk with Sixth Form students via Zoom. After her time at St Mary's, Joyce went on to study for a Masters Degree in Pharmacy at Queen's University, Belfast, before embarking on a career as a Community Pharmacist in the UK. Students were particularly interested to hear Joyce's experiences of moving up from Sixth Form to university study and her tips on preparing for the coming years.

In Joyce's current role at The Hague, she is overseeing clinical trials. She explained how this involves collaboration with doctors and nurses and has required her to learn Dutch (her third language)! She also highlighted the rewards and challenges of the role, sharing the vital role of pharmacy in medicine.

"It's amazing how something you give to your body from the outside can influence how you feel on the inside."

Joyce reassured students that:

"We all need to be open minded to know what we study doesn't define what we do in the future."

This was reassuring advice for our current Sixth Form who are currently deciding what to go on to study.

Learning Lunches are just one part of our Sixth Form Careers Programme, which was shortlisted for a 2022 Independent School of the Year Award.
