Art Scholars develop practical skills and critical analysis at photography workshop

On Monday 7 February, Key Stage 3 Art Scholars were invited to take part in a specialist workshop, giving them a chance to develop their photography practical skills and critical analysis. At St Clements Church, Bridge Street, Cambridge, the students took part in a Digital Photography workshop with local professional photographer Sarah van de Weyer on the theme ‘What it Means to Flourish as a Human’.

They explored photography through DSLR cameras, learning how to operate them, and how to utilise compositional techniques. Their assignment was to produce a selection of photographic images reflecting the above theme while exploring the church’s architecture and artefacts. They thoroughly enjoy this chance to be creative with digital media and to discuss photographic practice with a professional. 

Head of Art Mrs Conroy said,

‘We highly value opportunities like this where our students can work with local community groups in unified creative practice’.  

The students enjoyed a privileged view of the restoration work being undertaken at the church and were able to photograph and admire the wonderful mural on the east wall of Christ in Glory surrounded by angels and saints, created by Frederick Leach in 1872. Find out more about Art at St Mary's here.
