From oceanography to solar research: fascinating Science Live talks inspire our A Level Physicists

St Mary's Physicists recently attended Science Live in London and enjoyed a series of inspiring talks from experts who are leading the way in different areas of Physics.

Dr Helen Czerski, a physicist, oceanographer and broadcaster, based at University College London, opened the event with fascinating insights into oceanography and her research in the Arctic, highlighting the challenging conditions which include inquisitive polar bears and ten-metre high waves!

This was followed by a talk from Dr Jessica Wade, a physicist from the Centre for Plastic Electronics, at Imperial College London. Her cutting-edge research focuses on creating new electronic devices from carbon-based materials that will lead to cheaper, cleaner and lighter technologies in the future. She shared her passion for plastic electronics with such joy, enthusiasm, and determination that it was impossible not to feel inspired to follow in her footsteps.

After lunch, students were entertained by Professor Jim Al-Khalili's exploratation of quantum biology, followed by Professor Lucie Green, a solar researcher based at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, UCL where she studies the activity in the atmosphere of our nearest star, the Sun.

The day ended with Dr Simon Singh, an author, journalist and television producer, specialising in science and mathematics, who covered Philosophy of Science and The Big Bang Theory in a short and highly entertaining final lecture.
