Two talented St Mary's students win first place in inaugural art competition

We are thrilled to announce that Year 12 student, Eloise S., has won the senior category of the Rotary Club Young Artists Competition in Cambridgeshire with her beautiful acrylic canvas painting titled ‘Llanddwyn Island’ and Year 9 student Emily R. has won the Intermediate category with her vibrant digital art image titled ‘Sunlight’.  

The Rotary Club launched a Young Artists Competition, with a view to inspiring young people to get creative and to encourage them to use traditional or contemporary methods to develop artworks.  The aims of the competition are to: be creative, develop skills in using traditional or contemporary media, demonstrate an interpretation of the topic/theme and to express personal ideas through a selected medium. 

The competition was open to all schools and college communities and students who are home educated, along with any other young people’s community organisations, for example Scout Groups, and Girl Guides. This year’s theme was ‘Sunrise and Sunset’. 

Eloise and Emily's entries will now go through to the district competition with a selection of entries from around East Anglia. If they are winners in that competition they will go through to the national final. 

Elosie S. said of her work:

“Through the use of colourful acrylic and free brush strokes, I tried to capture the calm harmony of sunset on Llanddwyn Island, Anglesey. The place holds fond memories for me, and I wanted to transfer this sentimentality onto the canvas. I hope to have done the timeless landscape justice, whilst also giving my own personal twist of colour and slightly abstract style.”

‘We are so proud of our student’s creative abilities, Eloise and Emily have demonstrated an exceptional ability to interpret the theme. We all wish them luck in the regional competition’.
