A project devised by WISE (Women in Science, Technology and Engineering) board member, Professor Avril Macdonald, was piloted at our school in the Summer Term.

The project is aimed at school girls aged 11 to 16, to encourage them to consider the long term merits of choosing STEM subjects at both GCSE and A Level; expanding their general knowledge and education and preparing them for successful and rewarding career opportunities.

Our Head of Science, Dr Alves Martins, arranged for the Year 8 students (now Year 9) to trial the resources, as Year 8 marks a stage when girls are beginning to make life determining decisions, prior to confirming GCSE subject choices in Year 9. The consequences of these choices impacts A Level choices, in turn affecting opportunities for Higher Education and career paths.

The two sessions explained the range of careers available through Science, and explored the respective personality traits suited to different types of jobs or different disciplines.

The pilot project has also been of enormous use to both our Science and Careers departments and each has incorporated the material in to new schemes of work for the current Year 8 age group.

The scheme is being nationally launched this week and we look forward to sharing more updates. Click here to view one of the worksheets provided as part of the People Like Me campaign.
