Future GCSE Art students visit Fitzwilliam Museum

The Year 9 students who will study GCSE Art next year had the wonderful opportunity to visit the esteemed Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, as part of their coursework preparation for Year 10. This study trip allowed students to gather primary source material and inspiration for their Component 1 coursework, and to fulfil some of their assessment objectives, as well as to sketch in the galleries, and even view the new royal portrait.

They had the opportunity to study the work of one of the most influential artists of our time, David Hockney at the highly praised Hockney’s eye exhibition, and the privilege of being some of the first people in the country to see the portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, painted by award-winning British portrait artist Jamie Coreth. Ava P. said, ‘The painting of Prince William and Kate was amazing, it was so realistic that it almost looked like a photo!’

Ms Conroy Head of Art said,

‘It is vital the students get an opportunity to see artwork in situ, so they can see the brushwork, the colours, the scale, and textures up-close. It was also quite a privilege to view Coreth’s portrait of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge mere moments after its unveiling!’
