Foremost Chamber Opera Company comes to Cambridge for St Mary’s fundraiser

Prestigious local independent day and boarding school, St Mary’s, will be hosting a fundraising evening of opera at the Gonville Hotel, Cambridge, on Saturday 26 November with Diva Opera – Britain’s foremost Chamber Opera Company.

Members of the public are invited to the sophisticated black-tie event, which costs £75 per person, and includes champagne and canapés on arrival, followed by a stunning performance in two acts by some of the very best contemporary talent in opera.

Performing around the globe, Diva Opera has earned an unrivalled reputation within the operatic world and beyond. Founded in 1996 by Soprano Anne Marabini Young and Music Director Bryan Evans MBE, all of Diva Opera’s works are presented in spectacular period costume and sung in their original language. Giving around 40 performances annually, Diva Opera are now ambassadors for chamber opera internationally.

Money raised from the gala event will go to St Mary’s Magnolia 125 campaign, which aims to transform the school’s learning facilities for future generations of girls studying in the city.

Charlotte Avery, Headmistress at St Mary’s School, said:

“We look forward to welcoming the acclaimed Diva Opera team to Cambridge. With the Company more used to performing at La Fenice in Venice, and the Royal Albert Hall, we are very grateful that they have agreed to visit the city to support our ambitious fundraising efforts. It’s not often you get to hear world class opera singers perform on your doorstep, so we feel incredibly fortunate. This will be a very special evening and our thanks also go to our hosts at the Gonville Hotel.”

St Mary’s Magnolia 125 campaign was launched earlier this year to mark the school’s 125th anniversary in 2023. The ambitious five-year fundraising campaign aims to raise £25 million to help transform the school’s learning facilities.  Using money raised, St Mary’s wants to improve buildings across its’ historic sites in the Bateman Street area – enriching the learning environment for students and enabling a community outreach education programme focused on STEM subjects.
