Exciting Textiles trip to the V & A

The Textiles department took 48 Art and Design Textile students from Year 10, Year 11 and our Sixth Form to visit inspiring and exciting exhibitions of Mary Quant and Tim Walker's work at the V&A Museum in London.

The Mary Quant exhibition outlined how she became an iconic fashion figure in the 1960s London-based Mod and youth fashion movement. The collection had a wide range of fashion pieces, including miniskirts and hotpants that were her signature fashion items.

Our Sixth Form students also visited the fashion photographer Tim Walker’s exhibition at the V&A. It is the largest exhibition of Walker’s pictures to date. It celebrates his extraordinary contribution to image-making over the last 25 years and the inspirational role that the V&A’s collection plays in his creative process.

The V&A Museum was a new experience for many of our Year 10 and L6 Form Textile students and they all explored both exhibition with great enthusiasm. Some Y11 and U6 students also visited other permanent displays around the museum to make first hand observations to support their current topics of study.

The inspirational ‘making of’ videos also provided our students useful information on various textile techniques that made these works master pieces. The girls were buzzing with ideas on the way back home and they can’t wait to use some of their findings on their projects later this term.
