Year 5 experience the Battle of Britain Ops Room at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford

The Imperial War Museum Duxford was the ideal location this week to bring history to life for Year 5's topic on World War II. They spent a sunny day visiting the different hangers and seeing, amongst others, the iconic B-17 Flying Fortress, Sally B, which is the last one in all of Europe to still be flying.

Students also saw the most famous plane of World War 11, the Spitfire, with its ground-breaking design and distinctive silhouette, as well as more modern aircraft such as the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird.

They also viewed the tanks and military vehicles used during the war. The girls particularly enjoyed visiting the Historic Duxford exhibit where they could get a feel for the people who lived and worked at Duxford. Another favourite was The Ops Block, including the Watch Office, where the duty pilot would observe and monitor the day's flying activities. It was here, in the very room that was used during The Battle of Britain, that the girls got to experience what it must have been like during the busiest day of the battle.
