UKMT Senior Maths Challenge success

UKMT Senior Maths Challenge success

On 1 October 2024, 63 students from Years 11,12, and 13 took part in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. The challenge is 90 minutes in duration and is made up of 25 multiple choice questions.

The questions in the Senior Maths Challenge are designed to make students think about the stimulating problems and solve with creative methods. The challenge is open to both beginners and experienced problem-solvers.

All candidates start with 25 marks, each correct answer is awarded 4 marks and 1 mark is deducted for each incorrect answer. This gives a score between 0 and 125 marks.

The challenge is sat all around the world and certificates are awarded based on the scores achieved.

  • The Gold award is achieved by the top 8-9% of the entrants.
  • The Silver award is achieved by 16-17% of the entrants.
  • The Bronze award is achieved by 25% of the entrants.

This year at St Mary’s our students achieved 4 Gold, 7 Silver and 22 Bronze awards. Our 'Best in School' student was Josephine G in Year 11, who gained a remarkable 97 marks.

Approximately 6000 candidates, who have achieved the highest scores, are invited to participate in the Senior Kangaroo Challenge.

4 students from St Mary's were invited to the Kangaroo Challenge that took place on 20 November. This was 60 minutes of more challenging questions. Josephine G. gained a certificate of Merit for scoring 55 marks. Angel L., Agnes W. and Sophie G., in Years 12 and 13 received qualification certificates.

We extend our congratulations to all our students who took part in this year's UKMT Senior Maths Challenge.
