Skills Escalator Day takes careers advice up to a new level

Skills Escalator Day takes careers advice up to a new level

This week, our Year 2 girls participated in a 'Skills Escalator Day' organised by West Suffolk College in Haverhill. The day provided an opportunity to take part in hands-on activities delivered by local government, business and industry, with a focus upon possible future careers, and also with strong links to our PSHE curriculum.

During the visit, the girls spent time with six different businesses and organisations such as Suffolk Fire Service, Suffolk Police, West Suffolk Waste Management Service and HSBC, as part of a carousel of hands-on activities.  They learned how to take fingerprints, practised making a 999 call, correctly sorted recyclable and non-recyclable waste materials, learned how to process money being paid into a bank and designed a new coin. They also sounded the siren and switched on the flashing blue lights whilst sitting in a police car, tried on police and fire service uniforms and squirted water from a fire engine hose!

The girls had a wonderful time and impressed the organisers with their intelligent questions and observations throughout the visit, as well as with their enthusiasm and willingness to try out new things. Hopefully, the girls now have a much greater understanding of the parts that they may be able to play in the next phase of developments within these industries and organisations, albeit in a few years’ time!
