'Not Just For the Boys' - a look at women in science at the Cambridge Literary Festival
With the Cambridge Literary Festival celebrating its 20th year, we were delighted once again to be supporting a guest speaker at the Spring Festival with whom we felt a strong synergy - Professor Dame Athene Donald, talking about why we need more women in science.
Professor Donald's talk, "Not Just For the Boys" highlighted the obstacles facing women in science, and offered encouragement, making the case for greater diversity in modern research.
We were delighted that Head Girl, Emmi B., made the introductions, and shared her own thoughts about chasing dreams and defying stereotypes.
Emmi recalled:
"I received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: to introduce Dame Athene Donald at the Cambridge Literary Festival 2023. So, naturally, I didn't hesitate. As well as being a privilege to meet Athene Donald, the event gave me an opportunity to enhance my public speaking skills and to network with fellow literary enthusiasts. It is one of many examples of experiences I would not have dreamed of if I wasn't at St Mary's."
