Junior School careers week

Last week was the Junior School Careers Week. Mr O'Reilly had attended the Catholic Independent Schools Conference a few weeks ago and heard a presentation there about how careers fall into three categories: jobs, professions, and vocations. In Monday’s Head’s Assembly Mr O'Reilly spoke to the girls about finding their vocation in life, rather than simply finding a job, and encouraged them to think of vocations that would bring them challenges and pleasure, and be in service to others. 

Throughout the week the girls welcomed a range of professionals into school to speak to the girls about their careers – including dental hygienists, a police detective and officer, and a female pilot. The female pilot, Marnie, who is a pilot for EasyJet, visited on Thursday morning and told the girls that only 5 percent of pilots are female! The girls enjoyed learning about how to control an aeroplane and about the different sized aeroplanes that Marnie flies. Some excellent questions were asked, including: What was the longest flight you have ever been on? What does it feel like to fly in a plane? What was the scariest flight you have ever had?

On Friday, the Careers Week culminated in a careers fair at which the girls were incredibly enthusiastic about hearing more from representatives from a wide range of other professions.
