Embracing diversity
This academic year the school as whole is focusing on the Mary Ward characteristic of ‘embracing diversity’. This week the school has marked Disability Awareness Week, and the girls have focused on recognising and celebrating achievements made by Paralympians.
On Monday the Junior School pupils were joined in assembly by Paralympian swimmer, Liz Wright, who won several medals in the Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 games. In her presentation Liz talked about determination and courage, and her talk inspired the girls to try their best despite any difficulties they may encounter. During the Q&A session the girls asked some very perceptive questions. Aknur M. in Year 5 asked Liz what she thought when she looked in the mirror every morning, and Lara M. in Year 4 asked if she would have changed her life so that she was born able bodied. Liz responded by saying that she wouldn’t change anything about her, as it has all contributed to enable her to have such an amazing life.
