Carols for Ukraine: a harmonious occasion for a great cause

The Junior School's Bella Voce Choir was honoured to perform in the annual Rotary Schools Carol Concert at Great St Mary's Church, Cambridge. which this year was entitled Carols for Ukraine.

There were two performances, aptly named the Blue and the Yellow Concert. As one of five schools participating in the Blue performance, the Junior School choir sang to help raise money to buy an ambulance for Ukraine.

Jo Christian, Head of the Junior School, said: "It really was a special event and our girls certainly gave it their best. Watching it, I felt very proud of them.

 

"I want to express huge thanks to all the teachers whose efforts were instrumental in bringing together such a wonderful performance, delivered beautifully without music or word sheets and with solos and harmonies."

The event, which comprised two performances from a total of nine primary school choirs, was organised by the Rotary Club of Cambridge in partnership with the Rotary Club of Kharkiv International. A particular highlight was a last-minute inspirational contribution from a choir of Ukranians now living in the Cambridge area. Sergii Savystkyi, President of the Rotary Club of Kharkiv International gave moving speeches about the situation in Ukraine and the response of people in the UK.

The target was to raise money for one second-hand ambulance packed with medical supplies. However, the Carol Service was so well supported by ticket sales, donations and sponsors that there may now be two ambulances heading out to Ukraine.

A selection of music from the two concerts will be broadcast on Cambridge 105 Radio on the afternoon of Christmas Day, immediately after the King’s Speech at 3.00pm.
