Back to school tips & tricks with Olivia Buchanan, Head of Juniors.

For many children the return to school, whilst often exciting, can also be daunting and exhausting! Children like, and need, routine, security and friendly faces. It is natural for them to be a little reluctant and take a bit of time to get back into the school routine, as many adults do too! It’s important to remember that every child will respond differently, and no one size fits all. In my experience as a teacher and Headteacher, I have found a number of ways to make the transition back to school after the summer that little bit easier for everyone!

10 Back to school tips

  1. Stay organised: Use a planner or digital calendar to keep track of homework, clubs, and enrichment activities. Color-coding by subject can also help keep things clear and manageable.

  2. Set goals: Start the school year by setting both short-term and long-term goals. Whether it's improving a specific grade or joining a new club, having clear objectives can keep you motivated.

  3. Create a study/homework schedule: Plan a regular homework routine that fits your lifestyle. Breaking sessions into manageable chunks with breaks in between can improve retention and reduce stress.

  4. Prepare your supplies: Ensure you have all the necessary school supplies like notebooks, pens, calculator, and more. Being prepared can prevent last-minute scrambles and help you stay focused.

  5. Get enough sleep: Aim for 8-10 hours of sleep each night. A well-rested mind is more alert, better at retaining information, and more capable of handling the day’s challenges.

  6. Healthy eating: Maintain a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Healthy snacks can keep your energy levels up throughout the day.

  7. Stay active: Regular physical activity can boost your mood and cognitive function. Whether it's a sport, pe lessons, or just walking the dog, find something you enjoy.

  8. Build a support network: Surround yourself with positive friends and seek support from teachers or staff when needed. Building strong relationships can provide emotional support and enhance your school experience.

  9. Stay curious: Approach each subject with curiosity and a willingness to learn. Asking questions and actively participating in class can make learning more enjoyable and effective.

  10. Take care of your mental health: Pay attention to your mental well-being. Practice mindfulness, take breaks when needed, and don't hesitate to talk to someone if you're feeling overwhelmed.

These tips can help you start the school year on the right foot and maintain a balanced, productive, and enjoyable school experience.
